Native of Manhattan Beach, California Chloe Smart’s interest in music began at a very young age. Starting with piano lessons at age 5 her love and studies in music only continued to grow as she got older. At the age of 18 she took her first voice lesson and began looking into opera at the suggestion of her teacher. Since then, she has followed her passion up the coast of California, and across the Atlantic Ocean.
In her 6 years of study Miss Smart has shown command of the lyric soprano operatic repertoire. Operatic highlights include performances of Contessa Almaviva in Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro, Ilia in Mozart’s Idomeneo, and her Opera San Jose debut as the Sandman in Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel. She has also been seen in the Opera San Jose chorus in productions of La Traviata, Il Trovatore, Falstaff and Madama Butterfly. Off-stage some of her favorite roles in preparation are Musetta from Puccini’s La Bohème, Marguerite from Gounod’s Faust, Donna Elvira from Mozart’s Don Giovanni, and Gilda from Verdi's Rigoletto.
Miss Smart has found solid ground as a concert soloist in addition to her accomplishments in opera. In 2010 she made her professional debut with Ensemble Monterey as the soprano soloist for J.S. Bach's monumental Mass in B Minor to much acclaim. Other concert appearances as a soloist include performances of Bach’s Magnificat, Handel’s Messiah, Fauré’s Requiem, and Mozart’s Coronation Mass.
In addition to her many performances, Chloe Smart's talent has been recognized by the San Francisco Bay Area and abroad. This October she was a honored to be a finalist in San Francisco Opera’s Merola Program auditions placing her “among the finest young artists in the field”. In 2011 she was invited to participate in director Yefim Maizel's training program, Opera Academy of California. There she sang numerous concerts, master classes, scenes programs, and operas. The next summer Miss Smart studied abroad in Salzburg through the University of Miami where she studied German language intensively along with numerous lessons, coachings, and was featured in a master class with Dresden Opera's Ellen Rissinger. Miss Smart's merits have been awarded by the San Jose Music Study Club, the National Association of Teachers of Singing, and San Jose State University.
Upcoming performances include the role of Sicle in SJSU Opera Theater’s production of Francesco Cavalli’s L’Ormindo, and singing Gabriel and Eve in Haydn's Creation. Miss Smart is a student of mezzo-soprano Layna Chianakas.
Outside of her performance schedule Chloe Smart enjoys Ashtanga yoga, hiking in the Los Gatos hills, cooking, going to the beach, Netflix, and spending time with her family. She also maintains a private studio teaching voice (all levels) and beginning piano.
